Traditionally, global maps center Europe and Africa. I have subverted this convention by recentering a world map on the Philippines, acknowledging its significance as a key origin point for a widespread diaspora. Re-framing a global map engages with Countermapping theories by shifting the viewer’s perspective while designing consciously for the specificity of data. This project compares the migration of Filipino workers overseas between 1981 and 2019, and specifically focuses on the relationship between the United States and the Philippines. The periphery of the map highlights important context and history crucial to the global identity of the Philippines.
