CLOUD 09 is a shade structure pavilion designed using curved-crease folding techniques, a geometric method akin to origami that creates rigid structural surfaces out of planar materials. The primary material is HDPE (high-density polyethylene), a recyclable UV-treated lightweight plastic. Its translucency provides shade while letting some ambient light through, creating a sheltering membrane that is both illuminated and protective. The structure is composed of three unique modules, assembled radially.
Panel one's variation fully collapses onto itself, panel two pinches at a single corner, and panel three is slotted between panels and only bends slightly under tension. The two-tier structure consists of a gradient in creasing techniques which provides a modular composition which completes itself radially. Designed as a freestanding structure on the Syracuse University Quad, it sits along the axis of Hendricks Chapel, Link Hall, and the School of Architecture. Its presence resting in an open field allows it to be a landmark where curious students and faculty are invited to enjoy a moment of serenity underneath.
This project is funded by Syracuse SOURCE and the School of Architecture. Special thanks to fabrication consultants Michael Giannattasio, Robert Weaver, and John Bryant, our structural consultants Matthew Streeter and Sinead Macnamara, and Dean Michael Speaks.
